Corkscrew is a great place to lounge for a casual and relaxed outing with friends. They have a great varietal selection of wine that's won't leave your pockets empty. And they have even extend their menu allowing for more choice of food from wine and cheese to paninis and pizzas!! It's also a great place for large groups as they have a separate wine cellar room you can reserve to the great room next door!!

Pros: Ambience, parking, wine and food

Cons: can get crowded

Can you say Awesome?!!!! This is the place to be! Atmosphere, great wine, great company and lots of ambiance. How can one go wrong? This place also has WiFi, so forget the coffee shops of old... get your net on here. Possibly the finest selection of wine and by far the best service in town. The truffles, all handcrafted in Houston, are delictible. (!) A definite Must do.

  • Pros: Wine selection, service and neighborhood touch
  • Cons: N/A

Favorite Wine Bar in Houston

Posted by pinoyvlf on 11/24/2006

My girlfriend took me here for my birthday, and since then it has become my favorite wine bar in Houston. There is just so much to appreicate about the wine bar, that it will have you coming back for more. From the entertaining quotes on the wall, the cheese platters, large wine list, comfy romantic lounge area, and a very hospitable staff. The staff will help you find what you are looking for in a wine by letting you have free tastes (some places charged me before for every taste) until you find the one you like. The lounge area with the romantic starry dim-lighted decorum really helps set the mood if you are out on a date. The lounge area is also great for big partys that is fun for everyone. Overall, I HIGHLY recommend the corkscrew for group events to dates.

  • Pros: GREAT wine bar! Romantic lounge area!

one of my fav wine bars in houston

Posted by missorenishii on 11/17/2006

love the ambience and wine/cheese selections! and the humorous wine quotes dotted along the walls! there's a seperate room cloaked in a whole different ambience from the wine bar ... once you step into this room you are immediately greeted with candle-lit tables flanked with comfy couches and stars dancing above you ... a dim room with a touch of mystery, romanticism, and surrealism. comfortable, laid-back, and different. great place to take a date ... or enjoy the company of a group of friends.

  • Pros: ambience, parking, romantic, eclectic

Neat Place

This is a great date place. Wine options are very good and reasonable. The chocolate truffles were a bit pricey and below average. Go for wine and comfy atmosphere, you will not be dissappointed.

  • Pros: Good Wine Picks!
  • Cons: Not good Truffles

Sensual and Unpretentious Coupled with a Knowledgable and Attentive Staff

Posted by rusovich on 10/30/2006

Wine bars are everywhere...kind of like coffee shops. What sets them apart is service, atmosphere and selection. The Corkscrew has all three. The owners are always on hand, which says a lot about how much they care about their customers. The staff are knowledgable, friendly...and rather attractive, if I do say so myself. It's also a great date place. The lighting a sensual, live jazz can be heard on Monday's and Tuesday's and there's always something compelling about a renovated 20th century brothel [it actually was]. I also like the fact that they are very active in promoting a wide variety of events and get to know their customers on a first name basis. Highly recommeded, particularly for those who want to avoid the pretentiousness and social veneer of other wine establishments.

  • Pros: atmosphere, service, value
  • Cons: parking problems on crowded nights

No better hang on washington.....

Posted by jklalala on 10/03/2006

or in houston, for that matter. i came to town from new orleans (no refugee cracks, please) and was searching for a chill, soulful hang. i was happily surprised to find this place... the corkscrew has the best wine, the rocking staff, and the s*xy atmosphere to give great vibe to even monday nights... don't know about wine? the people there will hook you up without the least bit of snobbery, which can't be said about any other wine bar this side of town... trust me - as a lush, i know of what i type! everytime i've visited, i've been treated beautifully... the only thing better than the warm reception you'll receive is the KILLER WINES YOU'LL DRINK.

The Cheers of Wine Bars

Posted by emavligi on 10/03/2006

If you haven't been to the Corkscrew yet, you are missing out! What a cool place. It's definitely not like any of the other wine bars in Houston. It's far from sterile and full of personality. Not to mention a fabulous wine selection at toally reasonable prices. They even have great specials on certain nights. Live jazz in the lounge sometimes too. In addition, there's also a private wine room in the back. The place is huge. The owners are brothers and are the friendliest and funniest guys ever. The people that are in there are very friendly and interesting and the employees know their wine. Hands down the best hang out in Houston and I go out a lot!

  • Pros: Awesome prices, wines, company & entertainment
  • Cons: None, are crazy if you think there are any. Haha!

Great Experience

Posted by drifter88 on 10/03/2006

My wife and I are, what you night call, geriatric (read "old"), yet we always come away from the Corkscrew with a young at heart feeling. There is something about the friendly, homey atmosphere and the respect with which we are treated by the staff and even the other patrons that takes years off our lives (spiritually if not physically). We have never failed to make friends at the Corkscrew. We are not true wine connoisseurs but the knowledgeable staff always seems to find something good for us from their extensive collection. I highly recommend an evening at the Corkscrew for the young and the young at heart. It won't be your last time, I guarantee it.

  • Pros: Ambiance is spectacular
  • Cons: Needs to be bigger

The Best Wine Bar In The City

Posted by occams_disposable_razor on 10/03/2006

This amazing find on Washington Avenue is well worth your time. The whole place has a warm and welcoming vibe. It’s a phenomenal addition to the neighborhood. The owners deserve praise for spending the time and money to tastefully restore an older brick building instead of locating it in a generic strip mall. The wine selection is outstanding – and very reasonably priced. If you’re looking to try new wines or don’t know much about wines – the friendly staff, weekly classes, and tastings will open your eyes to some incredible selections all in an approachable manner. The key words here are unpretentious and entertaining.

Excellent Customer Service and an Unmatchable Ambiance

Posted by julzstaz on 10/03/2006

I bet that guy's girlfriend or ex-girlfriend slashed his tire... who the hell slashes for fun...he must have been out with someone else. After all, it is an intimate atmosphere perfect for a date. The staff is absolutely welcoming and you will feel like you are right at home. They have a HUGE selection of wines but also serve beer. So if you are a lady who likes to drink wine but your man drinks beer it is a perfect compromise! The cheeses are to die for and the truffles are even better. The location is convenient and safe beacuse there are always cops driving up and down Washington Ave... I should know I got pulled over there just a few weeks ago. So if you haven't been you should most definately check it out!

  • Pros: huge wine selection, knowledgeable and friendly staff great location
  • Cons: There aren't any!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great place but security an issue

Posted by mathieu72 on 09/24/2006

Great wines!! Great atmosphere!! Great service!! But I had my tire slashed while I was there. I parked at the car dealer next door. I would not go back due to concerns with security and not wanting to change my tire again.

  • Pros: great wines, great appetizer plate, great service
  • Cons: shabby neighborhood, unsecure parking
  • Overall user rating: Below Average

Where Have You been all my life!!

Posted by kndrhp on 05/10/2006

Finally, a laid-back, unpretentious wine bar that caters to wine lovers and those of us who are simiply curious. My experience at The Corkscrew was unsurpassed by those I've had at other similar establishments in town. The staff was quite friendly and enthusiastic about helping me find a wine to please my palate. I felt very comfortable and unitimidated by their wealth of knowledge. And they have a cheese expert! What could be a better combination than good wine and good cheese? They excel in what they do and keep things small so that service and a comfortable atmosphere are not comprimised. I happened to be there on a Saturday evening and the cheese expert was more than happy to prepare a plate of cheese and salamis to pair with my wine, a combination that was not on the menu and not exhorbitantly priced.

Incredible Wine Experience

Posted by avercet11 on 05/02/2006

As a wine enthusiast, I cannot express my first impression with the Corkscrew and with the expert wine classes held at the Corkscrew. A wine expert from California flew in for the class and gave the most informative wine 101 session I have had the pleasure of experiencing. I would suggest this class to anyone with a passion for wine. My class was sold out, via internet, so I would encourage anyone interested to buy in advance.

  • Pros: Trendy, Inexpensive, Laid Back
